Alginic acid is a biopolymer formed from chains of polyuronic acids and is extractedfrom algae sources, mainly Laminaria; it has a wide range of biologicalapplications. At present, it is approved for use only in combination withantacids. Alginic acid can absorb 200-300 times its weight in water and solutesat low pH yielding a high viscosity, high pH gel. This forms a physical barrier floating in the gastric acid contents, reducing acid reflux into the esophagus.It is useful for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease and indigestion.
